Starting from late June this year, there has been a barrage of announcements, comments, and blog posts on Dell’s new plans to install a GPS minicard on their Inspiron Mini 10 series of netbooks.
We think that’s an extremely cool idea. Seriously, dedicated automotive GPS devices usually are a bit too bulky to carry, mobile and smartphones with GPS are great and probably your everyday option.
However, netbooks, being somewhere in between those classes of devices allow to couple convenience of GPS with more feature-rich applications compared to still small screens of on-board or mobile phone mapping applications.
In a nutshell, Dell was about to offer a micro-PCI card with integrated GPS and WiFi chip used for triangulation (using Skyhook Wireless WiFi positioning solution) in what was essentially an assisted-GPS solution. But that was not all, Dell was about to throw in the Co-Pilot navigation software.
However, up till today, we still could not find any reference to the GPS option on Dell’s website. So we’ll keep looking and will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, your possible best option would be to get one of the new cool Mobile Broadband USB modems, which not only have integrated Assisted GPS, but also will connect you to Internet anywhere via Sprint’s or Verizon’s mobile broadband EvDO RevA Network.
Update – Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Series is now available with integrated GPS as customized version in Dell online store.
